About Motivation

Motivation

The primary motivation for choosing the system design was to create a healthy environment for the fish who would be inhabiting the product. Whether it be lack of knowledge, lack of time, or simple carelessness the owners of an aquarium can find sometimes themselves with a less than ideal living environment for their fish. This was a major design consideration and was addressed by making the system easy to use for the user and as safe as possible for the fish. This product does not completely eliminate the fish's need for human care. An aquarium is a complex ecosystem and this product could not hope to cover all possible needs of the fish, however the goal is to eliminate some of the more tedious task's for the user, allowing them to use their time to better provide for their fish.

This project has the main objective of automating some of the more important tasks needed for keeping a healthy aquarium into one easily accessible system. The automation includes water temperature, water level, lighting, flushing water, and harmful chemical detection.

Matthew Thornton
Computer Engineering - Software Engineer

Matt was a computer engineering student specializing in software. His passion for software development started when he was only eight years old when he began scripting and designing levels for a game called Graal Online. This sparked a passion for making and designing video games, which he does in his spare time focusing on mobile development. After graduating from UCF, he began his career working for Lockheed Martin - RMS - Orlando as a Software Engineer.

The idea for this project stemmed from Matt's other passion -- keeping fish and newts. He and his wife always have several aquariums scattered throughout their home and automating some maintenance tasks would definitely help assist the care of their little buddies when they go on vacation or are swamped with work.
