FriendlyEyes is an electromechanical system designed to emulate the role of human vision in scanning our surroundings while walking, aimed to offer an alternative or addition to the white cane for the visually impaired, while providing wider functionality.
Objectives
- For the wearable to detect objects in front of and to the sides of the user, as well as how far it is relative to the user;
- For the wearable to detect objects coming in the direction of the user;
- For the wearable to detect elevation changes in the terrain, which would reduce the possibility of falling by the user;
- All of these detections would trigger engagement of a state of alert when an object would cross the user’s path.
Motivations and Goals
1) Apply knowledge of electrical design to the development of a navigation device.
2) We also had a desire to help vulnerable individuals such as the blind and visually impaired.
3) There has been widespread latency on the development of navigation devices capable of guiding the blind through indoor and/or outdoor scenarios.
4) Due to the nature of the wearable device, it can be used by non-visually impaired persons to help users navigate in the dark or in locations that have elevation changes.
