Initial Project Documentation
Our initial project documentation write-up from the first semester of the course.
Download ViewThe ABB Ltd. Medium Voltage Switchgear system is an electricity power transmission system used for controlling, regulating, and switching on or off the electrical circuit in an electrical power grid or distribution center. Due to the amount of voltage and current running through these systems, the energizing and de-energizing or them can lead to a failure known as an Arc Flash event. Whenever one of these events occur it is of extreme danger to any personnel in the immediate area. Our sponsor, ABB Ltd., tasked us with creating two solutions to controlling the system from a distance. A wired, hand-held solution, and a more advanced software based controller that could be used remotely by authorized personnel.
The sponsor of this project is ABB Ltd. A Switzerland based company with a division for their US based switchgear products here locally in the Lake Mary area. They presented the project to us, introduced us to their system, and guided us through development and integration with their existing system.
